BIDEN RIGHTLY DENIED COMMUNION BY PARISH PRIEST, BUT NOT BY A SPINELESS POPE FRANCIS
By Daniel John Sobieski
It is a fundamental doctrine of the Catholic Church that life begins at conception and ends at natural death and that an abortion ending human life is a grave sin, as is funding and promoting abortions. . It is also a fundamental doctrine of the Catholic Church that when presenting themselves to receive Holy Communion they should not be in a state of grave mortal sin. Yet here was the Vicar of Christ receiving President Joe Biden without any public rebuke or condemnation of Joe Biden, our second Catholic President, for his support of abortion on demand and its funding and his recent statement that he no longer believes life begins at conception:
President Joe Biden raised eyebrows last week after stating that he does not believe that life begins at conception. A Catholic, Biden’s remarks fly in the face of Church teaching and they also appear to contradict past statements of his own. The President made the remarks after being asked by a reporter how he was going to respond to the Texas Heartbeat Act, which prohibits abortions once a preborn child’s heartbeat is detected.
“I respect people who don’t support Roe v. Wade, I respect their views,” the president said. “I respect those who believe life begins at the moment of conception and all — I respect that, don’t agree, but I respect that. I’m not gonna impose that on people.”
Pope Francis also recently had an audience with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi who not long ago blasted fellow Catholics for fighting for the right not to perform or fund abortions, describing their abhorrence for supporting abortions as “this conscience thing,” in remarks to the Washington Post.
Last month, during a debate in the House over a bill to stop abortion funding in the health care bill and to strengthen conscience rights on abortion, Pelosi had described the bill as “savage,” claiming that it would allow doctors to let women “die on the floor” because they could refuse to perform an abortion.
In her remarks to the Post, Pelosi, who says she is Catholic, defended her statements against the Protect Life Act. While some “may not like the language,’’ she said, “the truth is what I said.”
“They would” let women die on the floor, she said. “They would! Again, whatever their intention is, this is the effect.’’
“I’m a devout Catholic and I honor my faith and love it ... but they have this conscience thing [about abortion],” added Pelosi.
Despite their rejection of fundamental church doctrine, Pope Francis has said nothing about denying them Holy Communion, although he has had plenty of criticism of the U.S. over things like open borders and climate change. The United States Council of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has sought to clarify the issue and have the church speak with a single voice in denying such faithless Catholics Holy Communion. The Pope should take the lead but so far a solitary parish priest, Father Robert E. Morey, pastor of Saint Anthony Catholic Church in South Carolina, has had the courage to deny pro-abortion politicians like Biden this Sacrement. Still, many at the USCCB are pushing the notion that Holy Communion should be denied hypocritical Catholic politicians:
Bishop Kevin Rhoades of Fort Wayne-South Bend, who proposed the motion, said: “We need to accept the discipline that those who obstinately persist in grave sin are not to be admitted to holy communion.”…
The Catholic archbishop of San Francisco, Salvatore Cordileone, said last month that Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) cannot be served Communion over their political support for abortion rights.Cordileone said in an interview with The Daily Caller that he has privately discussed the issue with Pelosi and that she knows better than to do something “so provocative” as take Communion.
But Pope Francis, who is known for his oftentimes liberal views, is believed to oppose cutting off Communion to Biden. He said in a recent sermon that Communion “is not the reward of saints, but the bread of sinners,” and his allies campaigned against the US bishops’ push.
Apparently Pope Francis forgets the part that sinning Catholics are required to go to confession, confess their sins, repent and not repeat them.
In an age of “cafeteria Catholics” who pick and choose which church doctrines they will adhere to and which they will ignore, an age where we have a Pope Francis who would have us pray for the oceans and invites Amazonian “priests” and their fertility gods into the Vatican, it was refreshing to see a Catholic priest speak truth to power and tell a crave Catholic politician that abortion-on-demand is a moral evil opposed by the Catholic Church and to approve of it means you are unworthy of receiving the Sacrament of Holy Communion. You cannot be personally opposed to a moral evil such as abortion any more than you can be personally opposed to slavery.
Biden, while campaigning in South Carolina, presented himself for Holy Communion and was refused communion at the 9 a.m. mass at Saint Anthony Catholic Church where Father Robert E. Morey serves as pastor. As the Christian Post reported:
Morey confirmed with SC Now that Biden was denied the sacrament because of his advocacy for abortion rights. …
“Sadly, this past Sunday, I had to refuse Holy Communion to former Vice President Joe Biden,” Morey told the publication Monday. “Holy Communion signifies we are one with God, each other and the Church. Our actions should reflect that. Any public figure who advocates for abortion places himself or herself outside of Church teaching.”
He also noted that even though he personally opposes abortion, "I don't think I have the right to impose my view — on something I accept as a matter of faith — on the rest of society."
But, Joe, as a Catholic you are obligated to practice your faith, and spread your faith, to make apostles of al nations.
Your faith is not just a one-hour on a Sunday thing and you are commanded by your Catholic Church and its founder, Jesus Christ, to place the light you have been blessed with high on the nightstand and not hide it under a bushel. Can a politician kiss babies if he believes their birth is a choice like which shoes to wear?
Biden’s target in 2020 was President Donald J. Trump, who has publicly professed that he believes that every human life is a gift from God. Warren, who supports abortion to the moment of birth, denies the humanity of the unborn and their right to life. Does Biden remember the Bible passage where Mary, pregnant with the fetus Christians call Jesus, greeted Elizabeth, and the baby, yes, baby that was to become John the Baptist, leaped in her mother’s womb? Does he remember the passage where God reminds us that even before he formed us in the womb, He knew us?
Biden’s faith is very selective. The faith of our Founding Fathers was absolute when they noted in the Declaration of Independence that our unalienable rights came from our Creator and that foremost among those rights, before liberty and the pursuit of happiness, was life..
Father Morey was right to deny Biden Holy Communion. If only Pope Francis wasn’t so confused about what he should render unto Caesar and what should be rendered unto God.
